Skin testing is a crucial component in diagnosing allergies and developing a successful, allergy symptom-reducing treatment. Skin testing is done after a thorough discussion of your concerns and a physical examination. Skin tests will provide the information needed to formulate a plan to improve your health and well being.

Dr. Kocur performs the skin test with a device that is well tolerated by patients and will quickly provide results. Skin testing can be done to airborne allergens (pollen, mold, animals, dust mite), foods, medications, and insects. With your skin test results Dr. Kocur can create a personalized treatment plan for you to reduce or entirely eliminate your allergy symptoms.

How to Prepare for Allergy Skin Testing

It is extremely important that you notify Dr. Kocur of any and all medications you take before undergoing an allergy test as certain medications can interfere with the skin’s reaction to the allergy test. Dr. Kocur will advise you which medications you should stop taking and what is safe to continue taking. If you have any questions about medications you can and can take ahead of your consultation, feel free to call our office at 314-569-2015.

What Happens During Allergy Skin Testing

The skin is lightly pricked by Dr. Kocur which will expose the suspected allergen to the skin. Typically this test is done on the arms except in the very young who may need the test done on the back.

The spot where the allergen is applied will resemble a mosquito bite if you are allergic – it will become raised, red and itch. Skin test results are obtained 10-15 minutes after the allergens are applied. Generally the marks will resolve 45-60 minutes after testing is completed.

What to Expect After Allergy Skin Testing

Dr. Kocur will sit down with you to thoroughly discuss your skin test results and develop a treatment plan.  Your treatment plan will outline ways to minimize your exposure to allergens, discuss your treatment options and ultimately provide you with a path leading to improvement in your heath and well-being.
